Long line training for pilots from outside the U.S.

If you fly helicopters in a country without mountains, or where an hour in an R44 costs more than a day in one here, Camas is worth the trip. Our vertical reference long line course is ten flight hours in the Cascades with a working utility pilot, at a published price, and it is built to fit inside a short visit.

Why pilots come here

Terrain you can't get at home. We train in real mountains, on real slopes, with real density altitude, not a flat field with a scenario sheet. If your utility work will be in terrain, this is where you learn it.

The price. U.S. helicopter time costs a fraction of what it does in most of Europe, and the course price is on the website: $12,000 for ten flight hours plus ground school. No quote request, no surprises.

A short course. Ten flight hours normally takes one to two weeks depending on weather. Most students fly in on a Friday, start Monday, and are home the following weekend.

What you need

A helicopter pilot licence from your own country. An FAA certificate is not required: you fly with the instructor as pilot in command, and the course is training, not a checkride. An FAA commercial or private helicopter certificate works too.

English good enough to brief, fly, and debrief. If you can pass a radio check, you're fine.

A passport. We're required to see and copy a photo ID for every student we fly with, wherever they're from. Bring it on day one.

Getting here

Fly into Portland International (PDX). Grove Field is about 30 minutes away. We'll help you sort lodging: there's a spare room at the instructor's home in Camas that previous students have used, and the Camas Hotel is ten minutes from the airport.

Bring your logbook, licence, medical, and something warm. Mornings in the mountains are cold even in summer.
